C.G. Conn Wonder Improvedは1898年から1905年頃に製造されたサックスで、C.G. Connの最初の正式なモデルとも言われています。
元々、サックスはアドルフ・サックスによって発明されましたが、アメリカに渡り改良が加えられながら進化を遂げてきました。
しかし、正確な記録が少ないため、歴史には曖昧な部分も残されています。
特徴は、極めてシンプルな構造にあります。
装飾的な要素がほとんどなく、フロントキーと左手のパームキーが一体化している点も当時の設計の特徴です。
サウンドは、現代のサックスよりもアドルフ・サックスのオリジナルモデルに近い響きを持ち、ややこもったような音色が特徴です。
また音程が非常に高くなりがちで、ピッチが上ずってしまう傾向があります。
現行のサックスと比べると、キーの配置や操作性に大きな違いが見られます。またパール装飾がないため指の感触が異なり、オクターブキーは直線的に配置されているなど全体的に慣れが必要です。

History
The C.G. Conn Wonder Improved was produced from around 1898 to 1905, and is often considered the first officially recognized model by Conn.
While the saxophone was originally invented by Adolphe Sax, it evolved significantly after being brought to the United States, where various improvements were made. However, due to the lack of detailed records, some parts of its history remain unclear.
One of the key characteristics of the Wonder Improved is its extremely simple design. It features minimal decorative elements, and the front F key is integrated with the left-hand palm keys—a typical design of that era.
In terms of sound, this model offers a tone closer to Adolphe Sax’s original concept than modern saxophones. The tone is somewhat muffled, and the pitch tends to be slightly sharp.
The absence of pearls on the keys gives the fingers a different feel, and the octave key is arranged in a straight line. Overall, it may take some getting used to.
The Wonder Improved stands as a foundational model in the evolution of the saxophone. It's definitely one of those vintage horns that players can appreciate for its simplicity and distinctive tone.
