YAMAHA YAS-61は1966年から1978年まで製造されていた、ヤマハのプロフェッショナルラインの礎を築いたモデルです。
クラシック奏者で作曲家のミッシェル・ヌオーは、SELMERでもアドバイザーを務めたことがあり、彼よりアドバイスを受けて開発されたモデルです。
特徴としてJガードがYAS-62よりさらに大きく、シンボルのような存在感があります。ネック部分にはヤマハロゴがない点もポイントです。
またYAS-62ではベルのロゴがプリントでしたがYAS-61ではヤマハのロゴが刻印され、かつ昔のヤマハのスタイルを感じるデザインとなっています。
この頃のサックスに専用ケースはなく「アルトサキソホン」と記載された段ボール箱に直接収納されており、「NIPPON GAKKI」の表記が見られるなど当時ならではの個性を感じます。
サウンドはYAS-62と同様にパワフルで力強く、柔らかさよりもはっきりとした音が特徴的です。
吹奏感としてはYAS-62の方が息の通りがスムーズで、YAS-61はやや詰まるような感覚があります。
現行モデルとの違いとしてサイドキーの位置が遠く、操作性は現代のサックスに比べて劣ります。また指貝は現行のフィット感のある形状とは異なり、分厚いデザインが採用されています。
これらの点から現代のサックスは手に馴染むよう進化していますが、当時の楽器はまだ手にフィットしにくく試行錯誤しながら作られていたことがわかります。
YAS-61はヤマハがプロフェッショナルサックスを開発する過程で生まれた重要なモデルであり、初期ならではの設計とサウンドを体感できるヴィンテージサックスです。
History
The Yamaha YAS-61 was produced from 1966 to 1978 and laid the foundation for Yamaha’s professional saxophone line.
French classical saxophonist and composer Michel Nouaux, who also served as an advisor for SELMER, gave input during its development.
One of its distinctive features is the oversized “J-guard,” even larger than that of the YAS-62, giving it a bold, emblematic presence. Another point is that the neck carries no Yamaha logo. While the YAS-62’s bell logo was printed, the YAS-61 features an engraved Yamaha logo with a vintage-style design that reflects the company’s early aesthetic.
At the time, Yamaha did not provide a dedicated hard case; instead, the horn came packed in a cardboard box marked “Alto Saxophone,” often labled “Nippon Gakki” label, adding to its period charm.
In terms of sound, it shares the same powerful, robust character as the YAS-62, with a tone that is more direct than mellow.
The YAS-62 offers a smoother airflow, whereas the YAS-61 can feel slightly more resistant, almost as if the air gets “caught” inside.
Compared with modern instruments, the side keys on the YAS-61 sit a little farther away than on modern horns, which makes the handling feel less smooth. The key pearls are also thicker than today’s more contoured designs. These details show how Yamaha was still working out the best key layout before achieving the hand-fitted feel of their current models.
The YAS-61 was an important milestone in Yamaha’s development of professional saxophones, allowing players experience the early design and sound that shaped the brand’s vintage identity.
