YAMAHA YAS-62は1978年に生産・販売が開始された、今日まで続くヤマハのロングセラーモデルです。
特徴として、ロゴが彫刻ではなく紫色のプリントになっている点が挙げられます。
またボディやパーツのデザインはアメセルに似た部分が見られ、欧米のメーカーの影響を受けて製造されたようにも見えます。
国産ヴィンテージは先述したSELMERのような欧米メーカーに比べるとあまり注目されませんが、YAS-62はその中でも特に優れた楽器とされています。
またヴィンテージのヤマハサックスはアメリカ製のサックスが100万円を超えることもある中、20〜30万円程度で手に入ることからコストパフォーマンスに優れたモデルとしても知られています。
サウンドに関しては、現行のYAS-62とは大きく異なり、渋みがありバリッとハッキリとした音が鳴ります。
現行モデルとの違いとしてはJガードが長く、現在ではカットされている部分がつながっていることが挙げられます。
また重量がややあり、軽量化された現代のサックスと比べると操作性に違いが感じられます。
YAS-62のヴィンテージモデルはアメリカを中心にジャズプレイヤーから高い評価を得ており、現行モデルとは一味違う音色を求める方にとって魅力的な選択肢となるでしょう。
History
The Yamaha YAS-62 was first introduced in 1978 and has remained a long-selling model in Yamaha’s saxophone lineup ever since.
One of its distinctive features is the logo — instead of being engraved, it’s printed in purple.
The body and parts also share certain design elements reminiscent of the A. SELMER, suggesting that it may have been influenced by European and American makers.
Although Japanese vintage saxophones don’t receive as much attention as their European and American counterparts like SELMER, the YAS-62 is widely regarded as an exceptional instrument among them.
Vintage Yamaha saxophones are also known for their great value — while American-made saxophones can easily exceed one million yen, the YAS-62 can often be found in the ¥200,000–¥300,000 range (approximately $1,400–$2,100 USD).
When it comes to sound, the vintage YAS-62 is very different from the current model. Its tone is smoky and full-bodied, yet remarkably clear and powerful.
One of the noticeable design differences is the longer J-guard, which remains fully connected on the vintage model but is cut short in modern versions. The vintage model is also slightly heavier, making it feel different in playability compared to today’s lighter instruments.
Highly regarded by jazz players, particularly in the United States, the vintage YAS-62 is an attractive option for those seeking a tonal character distinct from the current production models.
