KING H.N. White Model は1915年から1928年頃に製造されたモデルです。
元はH.N. Whiteという会社がありその後 KING 社に買収されました。
KING は元々トロンボーンなど金管楽器を中心に製造していましたが1924年頃から本格的にサックスの製造を開始し、本モデルはその初期に誕生したとされています。
H.N. White Modelには現在のサックスにはない機構が多く見られます。
例えばG#キーのトーンホールの位置は通常ライン上に配置されることが多いですが、本モデルでは背面寄りに設計されています。
またG# のトリルキーが搭載されておりソからソ# への移行をスムーズにすることができます。さらにE♭(ミ♭)の運指が現在の楽器とは異なり、中指だけでレとミ♭の操作が可能です。
サウンドは渋みのある鋭い音色が特徴的です。ジャジーなサウンドでヴィンテージならではのサウンドを感じます。
現行モデルと比較すると、フィット感が異なり手に馴染ませるまでに時間がかかります。またテーブルキーの配置は急角度になっており、手が小さい人にはやや扱いにくい設計で慣れが必要です。
ピッチコントロールも難しく、高音域が上がりすぎたり中音域との音程差が大きくなったりする傾向があります。
他にもトーンホールの位置が現行とも違うなど機構にも大きな違いを感じます。
KING H.N. White Model は100年前の楽器とは思えないほど、当時の技術や工夫が詰め込まれた魅力的なサックスです。
History
The KING H.N. White Model was produced from around 1915 to 1928.
Originally, there was a company called H.N. White, which was later acquired by KING.
KING initially focused on manufacturing brass instruments such as trombones, but around 1924, they began serious saxophone production, and this model is considered one of the early saxophones produced during that period.
The H.N. White Model features many mechanisms not found in modern saxophones.
For example, the tone hole for the G# key is usually aligned with the other tone holes in most saxophones, but in this model, it is positioned closer to the back.
It also has a trill key for G#, which allows smooth transitions between G and G#. Additionally, the fingering for E♭ differs from modern instruments, allowing the player to operate the D and E♭ keys using only the middle finger.
The sound is characterized by a smoky, sharp tone. It delivers a jazzy sound that is distinctive of vintage saxophones.
Compared to current models, the fit feels different, and it takes time to get used to handling it. The table keys are arranged at a steep angle, which can be challenging for players with smaller hands and requires some adjustment.
Pitch control is also difficult, with tendencies for the high notes to go sharp and for wider pitch differences between the middle and high registers.
There are many other mechanical differences as well, such as the placement of tone holes, which vary significantly from modern instruments.
The KING H.N. White Model is a fascinating saxophone that, despite being nearly 100 years old, showcases the technology and craftsmanship of its time.
