KING Super 20 Silver Sonicは、1950年から1998年まで製造されたモデルです。名前の通りSuper 20シリーズの中でもシルバーの使用部分が多く、ベルの外部分がシルバー、インナーはゴールドプレートで仕上がっております。
Super 20はKINGのサックスの中で長い期間製造されたロングモデルで、シリーズ1から6まで区分されております。H.N.White社の職人が残っていた頃に製造されていたシリーズ1と2が全盛期に該当すると言われています。Silver Sonicはシリーズ2前後から製造が開始されました。
Super20は後期に進むにつれ仕様の簡素化が進み、サウンド面も含め徐々に安価なモデルとなっていきました。そのためシリーズによってデザインや仕様に違いが見られます。
例えばシリーズ1ではネック部分にダブルソケットが採用されておりましたが通常のソケットへの変更がされております。
また、ストラップをかけるリングも3つありましたがシリーズ6では、1つに減少しました。
サウンドは、まっすぐに響く音色が特徴的です。
現行モデルと比較すると、持った際に手に馴染みにくい印象がありますがキーワークは操作しやすく設計されています。
また音域によるピッチのばらつきがあり、特に高音域が上ずりやすいため演奏には慣れが必要です。
KING Super 20 Silver Sonicは、シルバーを多く使用された仕様となっており大変楽しめる一本です。Super 20シリーズの進化と変遷を感じながら、当時の仕様やサウンドの違いを体験できます。
History
The KING Super 20 Silver Sonic was produced from 1950 to 1998. As the name suggests, it features extensive use of silver: the bell exterior is silver-plated, while the interior is gold-plated.
The Super 20 series is one of KING’s longest-running saxophone lines, categorized into Series I through VI. Series I and II, made during the era when craftsmen from the H.N. White Company were still involved, are considered the golden era of the line. The Silver Sonic was introduced around the time of Series II.
Over time, the Super 20 underwent several simplifications in both design and construction. As a result, later models became more affordable, and their sound and build quality changed accordingly.
For example, Series I featured a double-socket neck, which was later replaced by a standard single socket. The early models also had three strap rings, but by Series VI, this had been reduced to just one.
In terms of sound, the tone projects straight and clean.
Compared to modern saxophones, it may feel less ergonomic in the hands, but the keywork is thoughtfully designed and easy to operate.
That said, the intonation can be uneven across the range, especially in the upper register, which tends to run sharp—so some adjustment and familiarity are needed for smooth performance.
With its heavy use of silver and distinctive tone, the KING Super 20 Silver Sonic is a joy to play. It offers a chance to experience firsthand the evolution of the Super 20 series and the subtle changes in design and sound across its history.
