歴史
KING Zephyr Specialは、1937-1945年頃に製造されていたモデルで、KINGの歴史を辿るうえで重要なサックスの一つです。
本モデルはZephyrの前身である Voll True から進化し、後の名器 Super 20 へと繋がる楽器として位置付けられています。
Voll Trueと構造は似ていますが、異なる部分としてサイドキーのパール装飾やトーンホールの位置変更が挙げられます。
また、ストラップをかける場所が3カ所あり演奏者の好みに合わせて調整できる仕様となっています。
ネックの構造にはC.G.Connのサックスでも採用されていた、気密性が向上し音の響きが良くなるとされている「ダブルソケットネック」が取り入れられています。
またネックが銀で作られている点もKINGのサックスの面白い特徴であり、後の Super20 や Silver Sonic にも引き継がれました。後に名器として発展していくモデルの礎となっています。

音色は力強く、張りのある響きが特徴です。
KINGのサックスはパワフルな演奏に適しており、Zephyr Special でもその特徴がしっかりと現れています。
現行モデルと比較すると持った感触は現代のサックスに近く、操作性が向上しています。サイドキーの高さが調整され演奏しやすい仕様になっていますが、親指の位置や一部のキーの押しづらさは残っており少し慣れが必要です。
KING Zephyr Special はKINGのサックスが進化していく過程を知ることができるモデルです。構造やデザインに工夫が施され、後の Super20 へと繋がる要素が詰まっています。
History
The KING Zephyr Special, produced around 1937 to 1945, is one of the most important saxophones in KING’s history.
Evolving from the Voll True series, this model became a key link in the evolution that led to the legendary Super 20.
While it shares many structural features with the Voll True, it introduced several distinct changes—most notably, pearl key touches on the side keys and repositioned tone holes.
It also features three strap ring positions, allowing players to adjust the balance to their preference.
The neck design incorporates a double-socket neck, a structure also used in C.G. Conn saxophones, which improves airtightness and enhances resonance.
The neck itself is made of solid silver, a unique KING characteristic later passed down to models like the Super 20 and Silver Sonic. (This model also includes a built-in fitting for attaching a microphone.)
The sound is powerful and clear, with a strong, resonant quality. KING saxophones are known for their punchy sound, and the Zephyr Special really delivers on that.
In terms of playability, the Zephyr Special feels more like a modern saxophone than earlier vintage models. The side keys respond more smoothly, though there are still some things—like thumb placement and certain key shapes—that might take a little getting used to.
The Zephyr Special was a key milestone in the development of KING saxophones. Its design and technical improvements helped shape what would later become the legendary Super 20.
