MARTIN The Martin Wurlitzerは、1964年から1971年に製造されたモデルでMARTINサックスの終焉を象徴する一台です。
MARTINは独自性あふれるメーカーで、火星をモチーフにした彫刻などユニークなデザインの楽器を多く手がけていました。
しかし、1964年にWurlitzer社・1971年にLeblanc社に買収されサックスの製造が終了しました。
Wurlitzerモデルは、MARTIN社がWurlitzer社に買収された後に作られたもので「COMMITTEE」の刻印が入っているのが目印となります。
全体的にこれまでのMARTINサックスよりも大変安価な作りに変化したと見た目からも感じられます。
サウンドは、MARTINらしいハッキリとした鳴りと明るい音がが特徴です。しかし初期型のMARTINと比べると音も軽く、深みのあるサウンドとは程遠い印象です。
現行モデルと比べると、軽量ながらも力強いサウンドは感じられます。しかしサイドレバーの操作性などヴィンテージ特有の慣れが必要です。

History
The Martin Wurlitzer was produced between 1964 and 1971 and is often seen as a symbol of the end of the Martin saxophone era.
Martin was known for its distinctive character, crafting many instruments with unique designs—some even featuring Mars-themed engravings. However, after being acquired by the Wurlitzer Company in 1964 and later by Leblanc in 1971, the production of Martin saxophones came to an end.
The Wurlitzer model was made after the Wurlitzer acquisition and is identified by the "COMMITTEE" engraving on the bell. Visually, it appears to be far more cheaply constructed than previous Martin models, a shift that is clearly noticeable in its overall build quality.
In terms of sound, it still retains the clear, bright tone typical of Martin saxophones. However, compared to earlier Martin models, the tone feels lighter and lacks depth and richness.
When compared to modern saxophones, it's lightweight yet delivers powerful sound. That said, vintage-specific features—such as the feel of the side keys—require some getting used to.
The Martin Wurlitzer represents a key chapter in the history of the Martin saxophone brand. It embodies the brand’s relentless pursuit of innovation.
