歴史
SELMER Radio Improvedは1934年から1935年のわずか1年間だけ製造された、非常に珍しいモデルです。
このサックスは、当時のラジオ技術の進化にちなんで命名され「Radio Improved」という名前が付けられました。1930年代の社会背景を反映したユニークなネーミングが、この楽器の歴史的価値をさらに引き立てています。
サウンドは深みよりも鋭さが際立っており、音がまっすぐに飛び出すシャープな印象が特徴です。高音域でははっきりとした響きがあり、温かみのある音質というよりも明確でクリアな音色がジャズ演奏に適しています。
現行と比べると、Radio Improvedは構造面でまだ改良の余地があります。特にキーワークは操作がしづらい部分もあり、脇をしっかり締めないとフィットしにくい感じがあります。それでも手があまり大きくない人には持ちやすく感じるかもしれません。
サイドキーやその他のパーツも現行モデルほど洗練されていませんが、このモデルの特徴的な構造は後に続くSELMERサックスの基礎を築く重要な役割を果たしました。
この楽器は、SELMERのCigar Cutterとほぼ同じ構造を持ちつつオクターブシステムが改良されている点が大きな違いです。
ヴィンテージサックスならではの魅力を持ちながら、現代のサウンドとは異なるシャープな音色を楽しめる特別なモデルです。
History
The SELMER Radio Improved is an exceptionally rare model, produced for only one year, from 1934 to 1935.
Named in reference to the rapid advancements in radio technology at the time, the "Radio Improved" reflects the social backdrop of the 1930s. Its unique name adds to the instrument’s historical value.
The sound of this model is bright rather than deep, characterized by a sharp, focused projection. In the upper register, it delivers a clear and defined tone—less warm, but more precise—making it especially suitable for jazz.
Compared to modern saxophones, the Radio Improved still has room for structural refinement. The keywork, in particular, can feel awkward to operate, and it may require the player to keep their elbows tightly in to get a comfortable fit. However, those with smaller hands may find it easier to handle.
While the side keys and other parts aren't as refined as those on modern saxophones, the distinctive design of this model played a crucial role in laying the foundation for later SELMER saxophones.
Structurally, it shares much in common with the SELMER Cigar Cutter, but features a redesigned octave mechanism that sets it apart.
This special model offers the unique charm of a vintage saxophone along with a sharp, focused tone that stands apart from the more rounded sound of contemporary horns.
